English examples illustrating cases: 

     nominative - refers to the subject
        The CAT is eating.

     accusative - direct object
        The cat is eating a FISH.

     prepositional - shows location
        The cat is under the TABLE.

     genitive - shows possession
        The CAT'S paws are dirty.

     dative - indirect object
        The girl gave some milk to the CAT.

     instrumental - how the action is done
        The bowl was made by HAND.
