Whereas singular verbs in the past tense denote gender, present tense verbs play a different game and so we say Он спит for "He is sleeping" and Она спит for "She is sleeping" in the present tense. However, in the past tense we wind up with Он спал for "He slept" and Она спала for "She slept."
PHRASES:
Лягушка спит под листом.
(The frog sleeps under the leaf.)

Я пеку немного хлеба.
(I am baking some bread.)

Дети спешат в школу.
(The children rush off to school.)

Вы одеваетесь очень хорошо.
(You dress very well.)

Мы ожидаем жаркую погоду.
(We expect hot weather.)
